This work began as research: I wanted to study Guatemala’s handmade craft economy, which sustains more than one million people.

As I conversed with artisans, artists and designers from all walks of life—through eight towns, both urban and rural—their stories revealed a deeper, more personal truth: craft in Guatemala is not just pursuit of livelihood, craft expresses identity. Through these photos and interview excerpts I hope to share some of their stories.
